Firefighting Family

My husband is a life long volunteer Firefighter/EMS.  His active involvement naturally drew me in.  Having spent over a decade serving in a variety of volunteer roles for the department, I know first hand how amazing these people are and how important their role is.  Our children have grown up around the department

Staffing, obviously, affects so much of the department's day-to-day operations, which in turn affect everything down the line.  Ensuring that the Department has the resources and compensation necessary to maintain safety and  competitiveness is critical.  The nature of the EMS/Firefighter industry means constant training. We must work to enhance training opportunities as well as cross department engagement. This will ensure that our staff has what it needs to serve not only our community but the mountain area as a whole. The leadership team at Elk Creek is constantly expanding its programs and knowledge to best serve department of volunteers and paid staff.  Supporting that leadership is the responsibility of the Board.  Taking care of that number one resource (both paid and volunteer), whether it's with proper equipment, new technology, or behavioral and medical support should be on everyone's priority list.  Using the resources available and leveraging employee assistance programs, federal training opportunities and state benefits to best serve the needs of our volunteers and staff is one of my priorities.

The merger of multiple area districts has been on the forefront of local talking points.  This merger question is the direct result of looking at the ever changing landscape of growth, population and development in the Conifer area.  How do we do what we need to do with what we've got?  The simplest answer is "with help."  The management team of Elk Creek fire has worked hard to build relationships with other local departments to ensure that equipment is taken care of and that the community at large is covered as completely as possible.  I would like to continue to strengthen those relationships and look towards the future for what's best for Elk Creek and the Conifer area.  Financially Elk Creek is in the one of the best fiscal positions it's been in over a decade.  I want to maintain that financial solvency through continued strategic planning and capital outlay.  Working with the other members of the Board and the Management team to identify end-of-life replacements as well as goals for future enhancements is an opportunity that will positively serve the District and community.

Community engagement is at the heart of every local government.  It is democracy at its finest.  Being able to directly speak to and engage your representation and conversely the community is a wonder.  Seeing how the decisions a Board makes immediately and directly impacts the community I serve is awesome.  When my husband first volunteered at Elk Creek, the department held various community engagement events; from a Safety Day with car seat installations to smoke house experiences to helping the community on Slash Days.  Over the years we have gotten away from that. I believe that working with and educating our local community is the best way to tackle concerns from wildfire preparedness to safety and prevention at home.  Engaging our youth and encouraging future firefighters will only serve the organization in the long run.
